A new approved treatment is now available for people who have experienced a lack of response to pharmacological and psychological intervention for depression and anxiety.
Leicestershire Health Partnership’s (LPT) Acute Recovery Team (ART) has started a new treatment called rTMS (Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) in addition to the existing range of techniques provided at its Neuromodulation Centre in the Bradgate Unit.
The technique involves stimulating certain regions of the brain using a high intense mangnetic field. The patient is fully awake and is able to read or listen to their favourate music during treatment. The benefits offer reduced side effects, patient choice and aid recovery.
LPT has worked collaboratively with partner organisation in Northampton to develop its excellent treatment pathway alongside existing clinics.
The Neuromodulation Centre now offers rTMS, VNS (Vagus Nerve Stimulation) in addition to ECT (Electroconvulsvie Therapy). There is work underway to also have Esketamine Nasal Spray, another treatment choice for resistant depression, available to patients.
To support this ART is expanding its team and currently recruiting Band 5 Nurses (RGN / RMN / Allied Health Professionals). People interested can email lptacuterecoveryteam@nhs.net for further details.
ART is also pleased to announce that ECT services have been accredited once again by the ECT Accreditation Services, a Special Committee of Royal College of Psychiatrists. The service has been accredited since 2009. This means the service meets all the quality standards in delivering a quality service.
