Specialist mental health nurse consultant role: The multi-professional approved and responsible clinician

This role sees a mental health practitioner provide consultant level, highly specialist clinical care within their specific professional skill set.

The very senior clinician operates independently within a clinical team, with competence and experience to the equivalence of a doctor’s role in the delivery of health care. As an approved clinician (AC), the post-holder is recognised by the appropriate national authority to act as an approved clinician for the purposes of the Mental Health Act (1983) and as the responsible clinician (RC) they are given overall responsibility for a patient’s care.

This role is for you if:
  • You have experience and further education qualifications suitable the role
  • You have expert experience of a nursing leadership role
  • You are able to advise and offer clinical consultancy to nurses and multidisciplinary teams
  • You are confident in providing and developing high level training to develop nursing staff
  • You can develop and lead strategy and policy development
  • You can champion and lead change which result in better clinical practice
  • You are determined to ensure patients and service users are offered by best possible care by your service
