A mental health staff nurse from Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust who ‘turned a very dark time into one of the brightest’ has received the international DAISY Award for the outstanding compassionate care she provides to her patients.

Wendy Rowe-Campbell, staff nurse, was nominated for the award for the care she provided to a mental health patient.

The DAISY Awards are an international recognition programme that honours and celebrates the exceptional care that many nurses and midwives provide every day.

The nomination, from the patient, reads: “I was afraid of being admitted and the feelings of being alone.

“I now see the admission as a new beginning due to Wendy and her support having a profound impact on my life that words will never be able to express. Wendy never gave up on me and showed me that I am worthy of life.

“Wendy went above and beyond when faced with adversity and challenges. She listened to me with compassion, without judgement, and turned a very dark time into one of the brightest.”

Wendy received her award from Jane Martin, assistant director for nursing and quality, accompanied by her colleagues.

Wendy shared: “Receiving this award makes me want to keep going above and beyond to support our patients, because although it may seem small to us what we do, as it’s our job, to our patients it means the world to them.

“The impact is making me realise that my hard work and those of my colleagues with our patients are worth something special.

“What I love about being a nurse is the fact that I can have a positive impact on every patient and the families that I have come into contact with in one way or another. It’s a joy to see patients leaving our hospital well and happy.”
