Adults and young people with a learning disability are being invited to attend Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust’s next specialist Covid-19 vaccination on Thursday 24 November at the Highcross Shopping Centre, to get the vital protection of the vaccine this winter.
The trust’s next learning disability clinic is taking place at the Leicester city centre retail hub’s vaccination centre, on the ground floor of the shopping centre, from 10am to 6pm. It is open to anyone with a learning disability in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, aged 12 and over, who need a first, second or booster Covid-19 vaccination.
This is the first time the clinic, which has been nominated for numerous awards, has been held at the Highcross. Despite the change in location, the clinic will still offer its acclaimed support for those with a learning disability, with a friendly atmosphere, longer appointment times and vaccinators specialising in learning disability support and care – to help to provide the best environment to enable people to have the vaccine.
Appointments need to be booked in advance to ensure the session can be managed to best suit patients’ needs. Some walk-in appointments may be available on the day, subject to demand.
Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust’s Sam Screaton, who helped to launch the learning disability vaccination clinics, said: “People with a learning disability are more likely to become very poorly if they catch coronavirus. Getting the protection from the vaccine is the best way to stay healthy.
“During the winter, we know that viruses tend to spread more rapidly than at other times of the year. Over the holidays we may see more people than usual, spend more time indoors and hug our friends and family, so the chances of catching Covid-19 can increase.
“Our vaccination clinics are designed for people with a learning disability. Our vaccinators are very kind and friendly. They will do everything they can to make people feel as safe and relaxed as possible.
“We hope by holding the clinic in an easy-to-access location it will enable more people to get to us. Having the clinic at the Highcross also means patients can see the Christmas decorations and get into the festive spirit, knowing their chances of getting very poorly from Covid-19 over holidays are reduced by having the vaccine.”
